Roses are one of the most popular and most common flowers given on special occasions like wedding, birthday, graduation, or even funeral. Meanwhile, the cultivation of it began 5,000 years ago in China. Roses were used in a various way during ancient times.

First Ever Rose

The first ever rose known in the world is the Rosa Nutkana and it is famed for its simplicity and its strength to grow even in situations or seasons where no other plant will survive. It continued to preexist human beings for thousands of years. On the other hand, some scientists and archaeologists first discovered rose through its fossil evidence 35 million years ago. It was believed that the oldest evidence of fossil of roses was in Colorado, USA.

Roman Period

During Roman times, for example, roses were used as confetti whenever there are celebrations. However, after the fall of the Roman Empire, the popularity of flowers was fluctuating depending on the gardening trends of the current year at that time. And the only place where they can spot the roses was in the Middle East.

Women during that time used roses as skin care to keep their faces from getting any wrinkles. The famous Cleopatra, adorned her living quarter with bunches of rose petals to get the attention of Marc Anthony. In that way, she wanted Marc Anthony to remember her for her wealthy possessions every time Marc Anthony would smell the roses and in fact, her technique worked flawlessly.

Medieval Period

Since the fall of the Roman Empire, Europeans struggled in planting and maintaining their rose gardens because of the struggle they have experienced from the faction of armies and raiders during the war. But one man stood and grew roses around his palace ground. This man was the King of Franks Charlemagne. Since he started to cultivate back roses, it came back to life and continued to grow. In fact, the monks were the primary responsibility for maintaining and making sure that the roses grow and stay alive. After they took care of it, they went back to their own gardens to build their own garden of roses and even used it as a therapeutic substance.

Since then, roses became stabilized and private individuals were allowed to grow their own roses and it began the rebirth of it. Due to the revived interest of the people to roses, many people grew it and people began traveling from one place to another just to experience firsthand the beautiful roses and other species of flowers and plants.

15th Century

Meanwhile, in the 15th Century, it was made as a symbol for the fighters to control England. Each color of roses symbolized different meanings. The white rose represented York, while the red rose represented Lancaster. Since then, it was popularly known as the War of the Roses.

17th Century

During the 17th century, the Royals used roses as a legal tender in order to use it as barter and for payments as well. Nowadays, there are about 100 species of rose sprouting all over the world.

18th Century

In the 1800s, Napoleon wife, Josephine, had a large collection of roses at their Chateau de Malmaison located 7 miles west of Paris. Also in the same century where the cultivation of roses was first introduced in Europe and China.

19th Century

The famous English archaeologist, William Flinders Petrie, discovered that the Egyptians used flowers, which includes roses, as a wreath to adorn the tombs of the Egyptians. It was believed that this tradition began as far as 170 AD.

It was also during the 19th century where Europe began to grow and cultivate roses and since then they began to see a revolution. In East Asian countries, like China, the Chinese Rose was first created. Then other species of roses began to grow as the Old Bush rose. It gained enormous attention from people because of the unique quality it possessed that no other flower has. It had the ability to grow itself in one season. This led the Europeans to begin cross-breeding the roses. Since then, many countries have begun breeding hybrid roses. When they found that roses are capable of cross-pollinating.

Modern Times

There are about 30,000 of different types of roses sprouting all over the world. There are different colors of roses existing and each represents or symbolizes meaning.

Red rose, for example, is a traditional symbol of love and romance. It is also a reflection of beauty and perfection.

White roses, in general, pertains to marriage and spirituality. But traditionally it is associated with

purity and new beginnings because of their quiet beauty. It is also often a gesture of sympathy and

remembrance especially when someone passes away.

Yellow roses are commonly symbolized to friendship and joy. They are often associated with friendship in modern times because of their warm and sunny color.

Lavender roses constitute pride, enchantment, and love at first sight. They are even tied to majesties and royalties because of their vibrant and classy color.

The pink rose symbolizes gratitude and appreciation. It is often given as a token of admiration whether it is your lover, fiancee or best friend.
