Lin’s Valentine’s Day flower-buying guide

Hi, I’m Lin, the founder of That Flower Shop. I’ve been delivering Valentine’s Day flowers across Singapore since 2018, and I’ll be honest about something most florist websites won’t tell you: most “Valentine’s Day flower” pages are interchangeable. Same red roses, same “free delivery” hook, same vague promises. So this page is different — I’m going to tell you what actually matters when ordering Valentine’s flowers in Singapore, what to spend, what to avoid, and why some bouquets that look great in photos disappoint when they arrive.

My best advice for 14 Feb in Singapore: don’t wait until 13 Feb. Premium kenya/ china roses sell out 4-5 days before Valentine’s Day every year. By 12 Feb, what’s left is standard-grade roses at premium-grade prices. If you want the bouquet you saw on our website, pre-order before 9 Feb. If you forgot — that’s OK, we’ll make it work, but expect smaller bouquets at higher prices. Either way, we’ll deliver on time or your order is free*.

The actual proposal moment

How many roses to send — Singapore Chinese rose count meanings

In Singapore, there’s a symbolic significance behind the number of roses you give someone, especially if you are from Chinese culture. This is the aspect that most websites on “Valentine flowers” tend to overlook. Here are the meanings of various numbers – check out the full meaning of all rose numbers here.

1 rose — love at first sight

A single-stalk rose for a first Valentine’s Day, an early-relationship gesture, or a quiet anniversary. Less is more. Pricing $15-$35.

12 roses — be mine (one for each month)

“The classic dozen — universal romantic count, one rose for each month of the year. Most-ordered V-Day count globally and in SG. Safe, classic, never out of place. Pricing $85-$160.”

24 roses — I think of you 24 hours a day

“One rose for every hour. A serious romantic count for an established relationship. Pricing $160-$280.”

★ 99 roses — 久久 (jiǔ jiǔ) forever

Count of “love that will last forever,” which is “99” (九十九) because “99” sounds like “久久” (jiǔ jiǔ), meaning “forever”. Doubling means “love that will last forever,” and this is the order of count used for the most important declarations of love in Singapore. 99 rose bouquet starting at S$300.

108 roses — the proposal count

108 is specifically associated with marriage proposals in Chinese culture. Choose 108 when the V-Day moment IS the proposal. Pair with our proposal flowers service for full setup.

Avoid — 4 roses or any count with 4

In Chinese culture, the number 4 (四 sì) sounds like 死 (sǐ — death). Avoid 4 roses, 14 roses (in some interpretations), 24 is OK because the meaning is 24 hours, but skip pure 4s for V-Day. Most experienced SG florists won’t suggest these counts.

Which color of roses to send for Valentine’s Day

Red roses — passion, deep love

Traditional Valentine’s Day choice. Red denotes passionate romantic love and is the safe choice when you cannot decide on anything else, your loved one will understand. Within the SG Chinese cultural context, red signifies good luck and fortune, therefore red roses can be used for celebration purposes.

Pink Roses – gentle love, admiration

A gentler choice compared to red. Lighter shades of pink are suitable for newly started relationships, whereas hot pinks are great for expressing energy. A good option for couples who do not wish to display much passion, especially young ones.

White and red roses together – union/unity

Using white and red roses together denotes unity and balance and is often chosen by couples who are either engaged or about to get engaged. All-white bouquets should be avoided for cultural Chinese people, as white is associated with mourning.

Pastel Mixed Korean Style – modern romance

Mixed pastels (peach + cream + blush + pink) in a Korean multi-layer style is the most photographed V-day bouquet in SG. The Korean-style bouquets have the best photograph results on Instagram as part of a couple. Price is slightly more expensive than the monochromatic ones.

Do Not Choose for V-day

  • All-Yellow – friendship code; suggests you want to stay at a platonic level
  • All-White (for cultural Chinese people) – mourning code
  • Black Roses – death symbolism, always avoid for V-day
  • Lavender/white lilies + freesia mixes – very strong smell, does not fit HDB apartment

Why are 99 roses bouquet popular on Valentine’s Day in Singapore?

Should I order red roses or pink roses on Valentine’s Day in Singapore?

If you’re sure that your relationship is serious enough – choose classic red roses (not many questions). Pink rose is a great idea if you’re just started to date and want to express your love softly. You can also order red & pink mix. Do not buy all yellow bouquets (they symbolize friendship in Singapore), all white flowers (mortality in Chinese culture) or black ones (separation).

Yes! We can arrange chocolate boxes within your rose bouquet. In addition to Ferrero Rocher roses you can order a separate box of chocolates. If you need premium quality chocolates other than Ferrero, please WhatsApp us (Lin) +65 6988 7427 with a detailed request.

What if she is allergic to specific flowers?

Common allergies in Singapore: flower pollen (lilies, gardenias, freesias), latex (balloon ribbons) or fragrance. Let us know at checkout and we’ll substitute flowers with low-pollen roses, gerberas, alstroemerias and tulips.
