Amongst the Singapore Chinese culture, the 满月 celebration or mǎn yuè is the most important milestone in the life of a child during the first year of his or her life. It is celebrated on completion of one month of healthy living, traditionally marking the significant survival of the baby from any disease during infancy and the period when there were high mortality rates amongst infants. The celebration is held for introducing the baby to the society. Mǎn yuè gifts hold certain significance, which include red eggs as they signify life and rejuvenation, ang ku kueh as a symbol of prosperity and glutinous rice cake as a symbol of unity. Modern Singaporean families tend to give modern gifts as well. This guide includes everything related to it. Understanding the 满月 (full month) tradition
When the 满月 event is celebrated
The 满月 ceremony usually occurs when the child is about a month old (28-30 days after birth). The practice in modern Singapore is to hold the ceremony at either the exact time the baby reaches one month in Chinese lunar age, or just after the baby reveal is done, which is between 3-4 weeks of age since this is a practical time for a trip to the hospital or baby photographer. Both are acceptable. The date is picked by the family and often takes into account Chinese lucky dates in the lunar calendar.
Where the celebration is held
Traditional venues: in the house of parents or grandparents (HDB or condominium). Modern venues: Chinese restaurant, with sit-down dinner. Now increasingly popular: intimate at-home gathering for family + Chinese restaurant dinner for other relations. Popular venues for 满月s are Marina Bay Sands and wedding banquet venues like the banquet halls at Shangri-La, Goodwood Park, and Rasa Sayang.
Who attends
Traditionally: extended family members, family friends, key business associates of the grandparents (since the child is young, not many other friends would know the child yet). Size varies from very private, small dinners of 10-20 people to large banquet gatherings of over 100 people. In modern Singapore society, a multi-racial mix of guests (Chinese, Malay, Tamil, Indians, Westerners) are common so traditional Chinese gifts can be accompanied by alternatives.
What the host distributes to guests
At the traditional 满月 ceremony, it is expected that guests should RECEIVE gifts from the host family – not the other way around. Commonly distributed gifts include: red eggs (dye boiled eggs red, usually distributed in pairs of six or eight), ang ku kueh (red colored sticky rice cake filled with mung bean or peanut), glutinous rice (kueh boko or salty oily rice), and even a chicken leg portion.

Premium infant clothing ranges
Apart from the red clothes, modern hosts prefer good brand name clothing and timeless designs. Popular Singapore brand names for baby gifts during 满月 celebration: Bonpoint, Petit Bateau, organic baby clothing range from Common Stork, Pumpkin Patch. Try to aim for 0-3 months or 3-6 months sizes (usually, newborn sizes are too small by the time babies reach 满月 age).
Personalized gifts
Custom-made golden or silver jewelry, personalized prints with baby names, photo book templates – personalized gifts are much appreciated. For Chinese names, make sure the inscription is made in correct Chinese characters (you can confirm that first with the family).
Flower arrangements for the mother
Don’t forget about the mother – she is still recovering. Wellness hamper or fresh flowers specially for her is a good gesture. Usually, in Singapore, women are in confinement for 28 days at this point and any little gift is always welcome.
Educational toys (long-term)
High-contrast black-and-white picture cards, soft books, sensory blocks, music mobile – things that the baby can play with in 2-6 months. Long-term presents are generally more useful than baby-oriented gifts.
Photography gift vouchers
A photography gift voucher for the family photo shoot becomes quite common in Singapore. The price depends on the photographer and starts from $300-$1500. It makes sense only if the parents highly appreciate this service and don’t have an arranged one yet.
Gift cards / vouchers
Useful for those situations when you don’t know what the host would like. You can purchase NTUC, Lazada, Mothercare, and Amazon Singapore gift cards for various amounts ($50-$200). Not so personalized option but very practical.

Wrapping and presentation
Red-themed wrapping (red gift boxes, red ribbons) is standard for 满月. Avoid white-only wrapping. Many SG florists and gift shops offer 满月 gift wrapping specifically. Modern minimalist wrapping (kraft paper + simple ribbon) is increasingly accepted but red accents help.
Cards and messages
Write the card in the family’s preferred language. Standard 满月 phrases in Mandarin: 恭喜您家添丁之喜 (gōng xǐ nín jiā tiān dīng zhī xǐ — congratulations on the addition to your family), 祝宝宝健康快乐 (zhù bǎo bǎo jiàn kāng kuài lè — wishing the baby health and happiness), 满月快乐 (mǎn yuè kuài lè — happy full month). Deliver to the venue (restaurant) on the morning of the celebration (4-6 hours before) so it’s on display when guests arrive. Or deliver to the parents’ home 1-2 days before so they can review it. Our express flower delivery handles same-day for last-minute additions.
